Our
first scene was the play’s opening in which I acted as Salty, Jade acted as
Gail and Ria acted as Hobby. During the beginning we focused very much on
showing the audience how we interpreted the character’s relationships with each
other, we showed Salty as the leader of the group keeping him constantly in front of the others and center
stage. In the line ‘Sit down first year, stand up second year’ in which Salty
refers to Mrs Hudson’s school assemblies Gail sits down and Hobby stands up on
command showing just how much authority he has over them and establishing him as ‘the
one in charge’. In order to show Salty not only as the
leader of the group but also a youngster who surprisingly had a lot to say I
paced and made elaborate gestures when I gave his speech, showing that although he seemingly hadn’t rehearsed what he
was going to say he was very determined to put into words just what he was
feeling. Even dismissing Gail with a gesture at one point, demonstrating how much he really cares about what he’s
saying. This action of authority parallels and further scene in which he
surprises Mrs. Parry with his maturity as he explains to her that the
politicians don’t care about ordinary folk like him. In turn I felt that the
interpretation of Salty showed his many sides which shows John Gober’s trate of
using stereotypes and multi-role.
